  • Data collected in 2016 (published 2017).

Measures Used

  • Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI).
  • Gambling frequency and product types.
  • Spending patterns.

Research Question

What is the prevalence of gambling and problem gambling among university-aged young adults in Macau, and what demographic factors predict higher-risk gambling?

Key Findings

  • Past-year gambling highly common among students.
  • PGSI risk categories:
    • 3.6% moderate-risk gamblers
    • 5.3% problem gamblers
  • Males significantly more likely to gamble frequently and fall into high-risk categories.
  • Casino accessibility in Macau influences early and frequent gambling.

8. Study Conclusion

This study shows that young adults in Macau (a global gambling hub) exhibit notable levels of gambling harm, with nearly 9% falling into moderate-risk or problem-gambling categories. Given the unique casino environment, students are exposed to gambling earlier and more frequently than in most jurisdictions.

Macau’s youth represent a high-risk demographic due to proximity to casinos and social acceptance of gambling, making the 18–24 period especially vulnerable. The findings demonstrate how local gambling availability and cultural normalization shape young-adult risk, reinforcing that regulation and access strongly influence prevalence.

Emerging adults and college students face increased risk of gambling, especially online. Social, emotional, and financial factors raise their vulnerability. Help us understand this issue by sharing the survey.
