New Responsible Gaming certification platform streamlines process

Responsible Gaming is at the heart of the lottery and sports betting industry's Corporate Social Responsibility activities. The WLA Corporate Social Responsibility Committee (CSRC) manages Responsible Gaming policy and the ongoing development of the WLA Responsible Gaming Framework (WLA-RGF). It also oversees member accreditation in line with the recommendations of the Responsible Gaming Independent Assessment Panel, and offers guidance to the WLA Responsible Gaming Working Group.

As of the end 2024, 124 of 158 WLA regular member (lotteries) certified to the WLA-RGF level 2 or higher, representing about 78% of WLA members, as compared with 72% in 2023, thanks to WLA financial assistance.

After a successful pilot project in 2023, using the DigitalRG platform – which streamlines the entire WLA RG certification process in one place – in which WLA financially assisted 10 lotteries from Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America to complete level 2 certification, the project was extended through 2024-2025, with the requirement that all members use the Platform for level 3 and 4 RG certification submissions. It was also decided that all existing WLA members at level 1 and any new members, will have 18 months to advance to level 2 certification.

WLA provided the following financial support for RG certification:  

  • Payment of annual license with DigitalRG.com platform for use by level 3&4 certification applicants.  
  • Paying for lotteries undergoing level 2 certification for the first time.
  • Annual license cost that covers use for all members undergoing levels 3&4 certification.  
  • Cost of perpetual license for IAP to use the platform to evaluate submissions

In 2024, the CSRC issued the WLA Responsible Gaming Framework Submission Guide 2024 for certification using the DigitalRG platform in English, French and Spanish.

2024 saw RG events around the world, including the WLA RG Webinar week. Themes covered included: benefits of WLA RG certification, technologies deployed to enhance player safety as well as responsible marketing and promotion of gaming and sports betting products.
