Eurojackpot countries set an example for cyber security

March 19, 2026

Europe’s largest lottery cooperation, Eurojackpot, is setting an important example in the fight against cybercrime. Nearly 100 IT experts from the 19 Eurojackpot countries gathered in Münster for the cooperation’s first cyber security conference.

“Eurojackpot brings together 34 state-licensed lottery operators – the security of our systems and all data is the indispensable foundation of our partnership,” said Eurojackpot Chairman Andreas Kötter. In light of rising risks, the WestLotto Managing Director raised awareness of the need for security vigilance at all levels. Since 2022, the topic of cybersecurity within the Eurojackpot partnership has been coordinated by the Cyber Security Working Group, led by Mikko Kujala from the Finnish lottery operator Veikkaus.

The conference focused, among other things, on risk management, ensuring operational capability in the event of potential disruptions and crises, as well as current challenges and trends, including those in the AI sector. In a guest lecture, Prof. Dr Marco Gercke from the Cybercrime Research Institute ran through a simulation of a digital security incident within the Eurojackpot environment. Gercke is regarded as an internationally recognised expert on cybersecurity and cybercrime and advises, amongst others, the European Commission.

WestLotto has been responsible for the administrative management of Eurojackpot since the first draw. At the control centre in MĂĽnster, bets from all participating countries are recorded before each draw, the draws in Helsinki are authorised, and the odds are evaluated.
