ITHUBA, operator of the South African National Lottery, has delivered the first major enhancement to its flagship LOTTO game since 2017, with early results showing a strong, positive impact on participation and player satisfaction. Implemented on 21 September 2025, the update focuses on increasing win frequency, improving prize distribution, and enhancing player value, all without changing the ticket price.
A key part of the enhancement is the shift to a full pari-mutuel prize model, a structure widely used by leading lotteries to support fairness, transparency, and sustainable jackpot growth. In addition, the number matrix has been adjusted from 1–52 to 1–58, enabling larger jackpot potential while still improving the overall odds of winning, now 1 in 9, compared to the previous 1 in 38.
The early player response has been notable. Within just two weeks, total LOTTO winners increased by 316%, from 188,779 (13 Sept) to 784,544 (1 Oct), with a significant uplift in the lower prize divisions, resulting in more frequent winning moments and heightened excitement. The launch was supported by a full through-the-line advertising campaign to ensure players clearly understood the benefits and stayed informed about what the changes meant for them.
The South African experience shows that carefully considered game refinements, supported by transparent communication, can strengthen engagement in mature lottery portfolios. With improved odds, more winners and faster-growing jackpots, South Africa’s refreshed LOTTO demonstrates how responsible innovation can deliver renewed energy and a more rewarding player experience.
