Funds are used to provide hospitals with new equipment, build new schools, pay education fees for pre-schoolers, and university students, preserve historic monuments and buildings, conserve nature for future generations, and offer social services to diverse groups.
WLA members step up in emergencies
But that’s not all. We have seen how WLA members contribute towards relief efforts during emergencies around the world.
We pleased to highlight these important efforts which greatly assist individuals and communities in need, following natural or man made disasters with the following examples in Africa, Asia /the Pacific, and Europe.
2025
Tai Pofire, Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Jockey Club provided funds and practical support to families in need, following the fire that devasted seven residential high-rise apartment buildings in Hong Kong.
Typhoon Uwan, The Philippines
In the aftermath of typhoon Uwan, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) prepositioned relief goods across its North Luzon branches to ensure immediate assistance to communities in need, while employees prepared, loaded, and unloaded boxes of essential supplies to be dispatched to affected areas.
Avalanche, Blatten, Switzerland
In the wake of the avalanche that devastated the village of Blatten, Switzerland, Loterie Romande contributed to funds allocated to assist those whose homes were destroyed during the natural disaster.
Floods, Spain
Spain’s national lottery SELAE worked with the Spanish Red Cross and held a special charity lottery draw, to provide humanitarian aid, emergency shelter, and basic provisions for families displaced by the devastating DANA floods.
2024
Western Australia, Lotterywest
The government in Western Australia, launched a disaster recovery fund, in partnership with Lotterywest, to assist residents impacted by emergencies, such as fires and cyclones with damage repair to homes and businesses.
2022
KwaZulu-Natal province floods, South Africa
The Ithuba lottery provided financial assistance to KwaZulu-Natal province flood relief fund, set up by government to help flood victims.
2021
COVID-19, Singapore Pools, Singapore
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore Pools stopped all operations following the authorities declaration that the lottery, sports betting and horse racing were non-essential services.
Once reopened, outlets were converted into collection points for COVID-19 supplies. Singapore Pools employees worked with a charity to distribute supplies to more than 17,500 households. It also partnered with an organization, to provide a center for seniors to learn digital literacy skills, in order to be able to carry out daily activities, such as buying groceries online. Â
