The WLA held its first webinar on the digitally formatted Global Lottery Data Compendium, which was attended by participants from over 30 countries, on 2 September.
In his welcome address, WLA President, Andreas Kötter discussed the evolution of this key WLA resource and the milestone delivery of its first fully digital edition in October 2024, which has made it easier to use, in ways previously unavailable in the printed format, noting:
"The Compendium is not just a database – it’s a source of insights that adds real value."
The Compendium brings to light the contribution of lotteries to good causes. Around the world, lotteries generate billions every year for education, culture, sport, health, and other public benefits. The Compendium provides the data that makes this visible and credible. It clearly shows how the regulated lottery and sports betting industry is not only about products and revenues, rather, it is about making a difference to society.
New features demonstrated
The session underscored the importance and benefits of this key resource which offers comprehensive, accurate, and timely data for the global state-regulated lottery & sports betting sector.
Matthew Spinks, IT, Data Analytics and Research consultant responsible for developing and maintaining the Compendium, demonstrated how to use some of the new features, including:
- Currency converter
- Language options
- Heat maps
- Links to even more data
WLA Executive Director, Luca Esposito, explained the raison d’être of the Global Lottery Data Compendium, which is twofold: first, to promote the interests of the state-regulated lottery and licensed sports betting sector by providing a clear picture of the global lottery and sports betting ecosystem; and second, to contribute to greater public understanding of the important role that state-authorized operators play in delivering funds for good causes. He added:
"In a world increasingly driven by data, the WLA Global Lottery Data Compendium is our industry’s most powerful tool to understand where we stand and where we are heading."
