GBO Italy, a subsidiary of the Lottomatica Group, and WLA member, became the first Italian company to obtain WLA Responsible Gaming level 2 certification in the betting sector (online gaming and sports betting, and retail), this year.

GBO, Italy, CEO, Alessandro Fiumara commented on the achievement:

“We are very pleased with this first certification process, which establishes a recognition of our efforts over the past few years to integrate responsible gaming actions into our business in a concrete way. The WLA certification ranks among the gold standards internationally on the subject of responsible gaming, and our activities aim for constant improvement. Employee training, network education and customer information on the one hand, technological innovation and development of protection tools on the other form the basis of our long-term strategy. Comparison with the international market is an indispensable benchmark for continuous improvement, and we are happy to be able to cooperate with such prestigious associations as WLA.”

WLA works hard to support its members in following industry best practices to ensure responsible gaming for all their players. In order to streamline and simplify the RG certification process, WLA approved the use of the DigitalRG.com for both lottery certification submissions and their assessment by the independent panel, starting in 2024.

Additionally, through 2024-2025, WLA is continuing its project to financially assist members undertaking RG certification level 2 for the first time on the platform.

We caught up with Ida De Sena, Regulatory Evolution, Responsible Gaming and Environment Senior Manager, and Emilia Petrella, Business Integrations Supplier Management & Communication Director, to learn more about their experience using the platform.

How was your overall experience with the DigitalRG platform?

Going through this certification process for the first time was a first test case for Lottomatica, to measure the goodness and effectiveness of all the actions put in place in the field of responsible gaming in recent years. It demonstrates our commitment to ensuring a safe, legal, and responsible gaming experience for its customers.

Our overall experience was excellent. In order to be able to comprehensively and thoroughly address such a vast subject as responsible gaming, the platform is a very useful tool.

What kind of support did you receive?

The project team of five people coordinated by two team leaders at the corporate and business levels, were supported at every stage of compiling our submission. We had online meetings and received useful guidance to assist us in better honing our answers, to avoid repetition or risk omitting important descriptions.

What are the benefits of the platform?

The platform allows a quick and timely check of information that must be contained in the submission.

The certification process involved an in-depth review of program management and the completion of questionnaires related to the 11 areas examined by the certifier, including research, employee and retailer programme, stakeholder engagement, and reporting and measurement.

The platform offered suggestions and provided examples to better direct the steps to be taken, to complete all the documentation requirements.

WLA certification calls for a deep analysis of actions and activities carried out by the applicant which necessitate collaboration across different business functions, and all to very tight timelines. The structured approach of the platform is invaluable for anyone applying for WLA RG certification.
