The Hong Kong Jockey Club - supports community in wake of residential fire
The Hong Kong Jockey Club stepped forward with swift and substantial support following a devastating residential fire at Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district, reaffirming its long‑standing commitment to community well‑being in times of crisis. The fire, which occurred in late November 2025, resulted in the loss of lives, injuries, and displacement of residents, prompting an immediate emergency response from both government and community sectors.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Club donated the entire gross income of HK$70.2 million from its race meeting held on 30 November at Sha Tin Racecourse to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s dedicated support fund. This contribution enabled timely financial assistance to be provided to affected families.
The donation was complemented by an additional commitment of HK$100 million from the Jockey Club Emergency Relief Fund. The funds were allocated to address the immediate needs of bereaved families and residents most directly impacted by the fire, as well as to support longer‑term recovery initiatives. Our immediate financial assistance also covered those injured and deceased foreign domestic workers in the fire incident. In addition to our immediate response, the Club allocated over HK$111 million to complement the government’s ongoing disaster relief efforts, bringing the Club’s total support to more than HK$ 281 million. We continue to partner with NGOs and are supporting various initiatives to address the long-term needs of Tai Po fire victims.
Working in close coordination with, and under the leadership of, relevant government bureaux and departments, the Club’s Charities Trust activated a range of programmes shortly after the tragedy. These initiatives supported transitional housing operators in providing daily necessities. Within 48 hours, the Club joined hands with operators of transitional housing sites and community partners and converted over 500 empty units into liveable homes. Additionally, the Club supported emergency medication, emotional and bereavement support, food assistance, and targeted aid for children, families, and older residents in Tai Po district.
Internally, the Club arranged temporary accommodation, contingency financial assistance, and a 24-hour support hotline for employees affected by the incident.
Through these collective efforts, The Hong Kong Jockey Club demonstrated how a lottery and racing operator can contribute meaningfully to community resilience and recovery in the aftermath of a major emergency.
