A core part of WLA Corporate Social Responsibility activities is to continually enhance the support it provides members to achieve WLA Responsible Gaming certification. In order to streamline and simplify the certification process, the WLA Executive Committee approved the compulsory use of the DigitalRG.com resource platform, for both lottery certification submissions and their assessment by the independent panel, starting in 2024.

Moreover, through 2024-2025, WLA is pursuing its project to financially assist members undertaking RG certification level 2 for the first time on the platform.

Varelotteriet or The Commodity Lottery, is a WLA member, and one of Denmark's oldest lotteries, founded in 1887. Its profits support charitable, social and humanitarian causes in accordance with its agreement with the Ministry of Justice.

This year, Varelotteriet successfully completed level 2 WLA Responsible Gaming certification. In an interview with the CEO, Anders Holst, we learn more about the lottery’s experience using the DigitalRG platform to complete the process.

Was this the first time to carry out WLA RG certification?

This was our first Responsible Gaming certification application. In 2021, we completed certification to the WLA security control standard (WLA SCS:2020). From this experience, our expectation was that the RG process might be a smaller task. Unfortunately, based on this assumption, we delayed the start of work. However, upon discovering the DigitalRG platform, we were able to get back in the saddle and regain momentum.

How was your experience using DigitalRG platform?

Initially, we had not heard of the platform. It was only after attending the WLA information seminar that we discovered its existence. When we finally got started with the application process, we also signed up as members on the platform. From there on, our project plan changed, from using our own reporting system, to filling in the different subsections in the platform. I believe that having a supporting system for aggregating materials also helped us expedite the process, as we were a little short on time.

What kind of assistance did you receive?

By signing up to the DigitalRG platform you receive a number of hours of assistance for free; in our case eight hours. We got advice from Laura Da Silva, who was part of several other application processes across the different tiers/levels of the certification. It was my experience that having this personal guide was both an inspiration for how and what to embed in the application, and greatly helped to keep us focused on the tasks. In that sense, it reminded me of writing my master’s thesis where several check-ins with the tutor facilitated the process and enabled keeping to deadlines.

What did you like about the platform?

The platform in many ways directs your focus on the specific sub-tasks within each of the 10 RG elements. Thus, by using the platform, the certification application is forced to move forward, which is necessary if you have a tight deadline as we did.

How many people were involved from Varelotteriet?

At Varelotteriet we tried to keep up with the tight schedule, by limiting the people involved in the application process. Thus, to a large extent, I completed the process, together with our Deputy Director. By keeping the roster short, we were able to quickly identify areas for improvement, and rapidly agree on the responsibilities regarding the actions needed to facilitate these improvements.

Were there any challenges?

The main challenge that we encountered was our own optimistic timeline. However, with the DigitalRG platform and help provided, we were able to collate the materials required for the application and gap analysis in a little less than one month.
