WLA publishes new global research on emerging adults and related gambling risk

The WLA has added new research from the East Carolina University, Gambling Research and Policy Initiative (GRPI) to its Reaching Emerging Adults microsite.

As part of the new CSR strategy, and in response to the growing issue of gambling-related risks among emerging adult populations worldwide (aged 18 to 24), WLA partnered with the East Carolina University, GRPI, and launched a microsite that provides information, research and updates to better understand and where needed assist this particular player group, at the end of 2025.

Global perspectives

The research covers the five WLA global regions, and provides overview summaries of the findings, including:

Section 1 – Global Prevalence: Where and how much are young adults gambling?

  • 10 research articles from Africa, Asia and Europe/ Middle East regions.

Section 2 – Cross-Regional Comparisons: Why and How do countries differ?

  • 9 research articles all of which offer comparisons between different regions.

Section 3 – Forms of Gambling: What exactly are young adults doing?

  • 10 research articles from Asia, Europe/ Middle East, North America and some comparison articles.

Addressing Emerging Adult microsite

The WLA will continue to add relevant content to the site, to inform WLA members about Emerging Adult gambling risks as well as provide relevant resources, and practical guidance to assist them to better understand, communicate with, and support Emerging Adults.

It may also be useful for emerging adult players as well as any organizations or individuals supporting them. It offers:

  • An overview of “What is an Emerging Adult”
  • Risk Factors unique to emerging adults
  • New emerging adult screen/survey developed specifically to measure gambling risk for this population
  • Resources and efforts in place by member lotteries & sports betting operators to address emerging adult needs
  • Information sheets & rack cards for any market, to inform patrons of gambling-related issues and resources.
  • International best practices for communicating with young adults
