Understanding Sports Betting & Gambling Risk

Sports betting in the U.S. has recently expanded, but many overlook the risks of potential gambling-related harm. Continued betting beyond one's means or neglecting life priorities in order to gamble can lead to harms that include possible gambling addiction ("gambling disorder"). It's important to recognize the signs early and take steps to keep gambling fun and lower risk.

Approximately 90% of the U.S. population will gamble in their lifetime & over 60% each year. Gambling is not bad, but you need to stay informed and keep your behavior lower risk so you do not suffer from gambling-related harms.

If you gamble on sports, follow these tips:

  • Set a budget - Only bet what you can attord to lose.
  • Take breaks - Avoid excessive play.
  • Limit time & frequency - Set boundaries.
  • Gamble socially - Play with triends.
  • Mix in other activities - Keep balance.
  • Use limit-setting tools - Most apps offer "responsible gaming" tools.
  • See it as entertainment - Not a way to make money.
  • Follow the law - Only bet where it's legal & avoid offshore/illegal betting.
